Yahoo is a multinational technology company that originated as a web directory and search engine. Founded in January 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo at Stanford University, Yahoo quickly evolved into one of the early pioneers of the internet, offering a wide range of services beyond search. The company’s name is an acronym for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle,” reflecting its initial focus on organizing and categorizing web content.
One of Yahoo’s major contributions to the internet was its web portal, which provided users with a variety of services, including email (Yahoo Mail), news, finance, and messaging. Yahoo Mail, launched in 1997, became one of the leading email services globally. The company expanded its offerings through acquisitions, including notable purchases like GeoCities, an early web hosting service, and Flickr, a popular photo-sharing platform.
Over the years, Yahoo faced various challenges and changes in leadership. In 2016, Verizon Communications acquired Yahoo’s internet business for nearly $4.5 billion. Later In September 2021, investment funds managed by Apollo Global Management acquired 90% of Yahoo. This acquisition marked another chapter in Yahoo’s history, as it continued to adapt to the dynamic landscape of the tech industry.
